Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not? This book sets out to find young companies starting from a weak position but which rose to become great businesses. The authors match these companies with others, in similar circumstances, which failed to achieve the same spectacular results. Key ideas include a disciplined approach to growth even in seemingly favorable conditions, many small experiments and avoiding potentially catastrophic risk. The findings show how an entrepreneur can apply the evidence to create an enterprise which does not merely react to events but shapes them.

“Creativity dies in an indisciplined environment.”

“The purpose of bureaucracy is to compensate for incompetence and lack of discipline.”
In the end of April the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO’s students and graduates set off for a traditional expedition to Himalayas in Nepal. Within two weeks the group has covered more than 100 km, and the majority of participants have reached the height of 5800 m. The team leaders – Andrei Volkov, Dean of the SKOLKOVO business school and President of the Russian Mountaineering Federation, and Yuri Belonoschenko, Head of UralSib Asset Management, SKOLKOVO EMBA 7 student – have conquered Mera Peak (6476 m).
“I came up with the idea of such an educational module for the SKOLKOVO business school a couple of years ago. And last year we managed to conduct it for the first time. During that year the core principle of the module has not changes. I’m still sure that a person reaches true knowledge only by means of overcoming. It does not mean only physical overcoming, but it definitely giving up or overstepping something", says Andre Volkov.

The 2013 route was more complicated and less equipped than the 2012 one. Taking into account the last year experience, the decision was made to start the expedition from lower heights and ascend gradually so that the acclimatization process could run smoothly. For the same reasons the traditional route to the basic camp Mera Peak has been changed: the group has eliminated passing the Mera La (4700 m) pass, having chosen under-populated paths and covered a longer way with fewer altitude drops. On the way the participants have added new words to their personal vocabulary, such as “basic food, no menu” – there tourists are a rare occurrence.

The lack of comfortable infrastructure has been compensated with impressive beauty of nature. The trekking went through blossoming rhododendron groves, pine forests, along mountain rivers.

The sport and moral preparation of the group has proved to be sufficient for 10-12-hour daily crossings. During the first couple of days the route had been connected with constant ascents and descents, after that a continuous ascent to the settlement Kartse (5100 m) and the high-altitude camp Mera Peak (5 800m) started.
This year “Management” has been chosen as a key topic for the intellectual work during the module. As usual the participants had prepared individual reports on the issues, directly or indirectly connected with management. The majority of questions were discussed on examples and real business cases from the participants’ personal experience.
On April 3 the SKOLKOVP MBA master class “Leadership: the new wave” hold by Pierre Casse, Professor of Leadership at the SKOLKOVO business school, took place on the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO Campus. Pierre Casse, a leading world expert in leadership, has told what it means to be a leader in the modern economic conditions. Below you will find his key points:

If the leadership is not around to turn different challenges into something new (ideas, opportunities etc.), then the mankind is regressing.

It's wrong to have an HR-department in your company - people are not resources anymore!

You should have a Human Talents department instead.

3 basic kinds of leadership: strategic leadership, organizational leadership and people leadership

Strategic leadership is about where you are going and how to get there.

It's a projection to the future, what you must do to make it happen.

Organizational leadership is about creating a proper structure, a system and launching processes in order to use your resources wisely.

People leadership is about creating opportunities for your employees to perform, to enjoy, to grow professionally and to contribute.

What is vision? Vision is a dream with a deadline!

True leaders really care about politics: they want to be sure, that right people know right facts about their company at a right time.

Success will come to those leaders who don't just think outside the box, but invent new boxes.
On April 2 another SKOLKOVO Entrepreneurs’ Club meeting took place. That time we had Bill Reichert, Managing Director, Garage ventures, partner of Guy Kawasaki, Mikhail Konoplev, Operational Director, Airbnb in Russia and CIS, Andrei Zotov, Founder and Co-owner of ADJ Consulting. Participants have discussed lots of interesting topics and questions. Below you can find the key points voiced at the event.

Mikhail Konoplev
“The key point of the economics of joint use is that a joint access to resources is much more beneficial than their possession”.

Bill Reichert
“The thing you should achieve during your pitch is a wow effect. Investors give their money being guided by their hearts, not by their minds”.

“3 ways to make an investor fall in love with you: a team, technology, ability to turn the world and perception of it. Each startup has to decide what aspect to focus on while interacting with investors, find a basis for the wow effect”.
“3 steps to the wow effect (components of a great pitch):

Formulate the essence of the project in simple words and short phrases. Imagine that a famous journalist has just one phrase that he or she can use in the article.

Use clear and quantitative terms: what profit will an investor get from financing your company? Do not be too self-assured: each time discussing a project the investor has the following phrase on his mind, “I have already heard that”.

Articulate the core competitive advantage, “Unlike other companies that you’ve heard about, we…”

Andrei Zotov
“You have to do three things before the IPO so that your shares would be well evaluated:

Provide investors with full detailed information about your project’s technology;

Bring corporate management on a higher level, so that your company would look more preferable that others in the market;

Overtake all the responsibility for disclosure of any details regarding you business and company. The investor should be safe!”

The participants have asked lots of questions, and some have even dared a pitch in front of Bill Reichert! The event has finished with traditional networking in Lounge Bar.
Thanks to all the speakers and participants!

That time we have tried a mixed format of the meeting – a Skype conversation with Esther Dyson and live performances. We have recorded the Skype discussion and are going to decode it next week, for now here are Igor Agamirzyan’s points:

Truth#1 “All new technological industries have been created in a similar manner!”

Truth#2 “The higher a technological industry is, the fewer market leaders there are”
Truth#3 “A period of brands consolidation always ends with such industry’s state when it starts to stagnate technologically”
Truth#4 “What is the next big think? — physical & digital!”
Truth#5 “All income centres move from production facilities to soft and design”
“If a business can be destroyed, then it eventually will be destroyed. It is only a matter of
whether you do it to yourself or a rival does it to you.”
“Strategy used to be about protecting existing competitive advantage, but not any more. Today
it is about finding the next advantage.”

Instead of developing products in rich countries and then trying to export them
worldwide, maybe with scaled down features, reverse innovation is about products first
adopted in the developing world. Surprisingly often these innovations defy gravity and
flow uphill. Reverse innovation combines a global strategy with an intense focus on
local needs and preferences. This book shows how, counter intuitively, there are many
circumstances when business models and products developed in emerging markets can
provide new opportunities in rich economies also. Three key points for multinationals:
- to capture growth in emerging markets it is necessary to innovate, not just
export

- leverage opportunities to export innovation from emerging markets to other
similar economies and eventually to the mainstream
- keep watch on the emerging giants, the rapidly growing native companies

On February 16th more than 60 entrepreneurs took part in a master class on e-commerce held by Bas Godska, international specialist with 13 years of working experience! That was one of the most informative and interactive master classes. Bas has eagerly given detailed answers to numerous participants’ questions as well as lots of practical recommendations.

Below you will find key points of Bas’s performance and slides from his presentation.
Here are two formulae that determine success in e-commerce. Keep them in mind and thoroughly assess each feature regarding your business

And, surely, there you have a couple of practical recommendations from Bas Godska:

«Within the first year you must integrate a possibility to pay online»

«To be on the first position in context advertising is not beneficial»

«At the beginning a half of leads may come via context advertising»

«You can expect that 20% of calls are sales!»

« Interregional companies should use a federal telephone number for a call centre»

«The website’s design doesn’t play the key role in your startup’s success. Trust that takes a lot of time to gain is really important»

«A website is never completely done, there is always something that can be improved!»

«Use webseo.com to follow up your positions in the search results»

«Do not forget to take a fresh look at the process of registration and order on your website!»

« Where can you get leads for a startup? SEO, partners, retargeting, direct mails»

“Have you seen the American action film “300” - 300 referring to the 300 Spartans? Well, this is a similar tale, only the Spartans in this case are deans of Russian universities. There were 300 and now, after a highly competitive selection procedure for admission onto the programme, only just over 100 remain. Their fate is sealed and they are destined for success,” says Alexey Gusev, Director of Public Sector Programmes at the SKOLKOVO Education Development Centre, when describing the participants of the “New Higher Education Leaders” programme.

What is so special about the programme? Why are top managers of leading Russian universities so interested in it? And why did Dmitry Medvedev himself, Chair of the SKOLKOVO Advisory Board, say that, “The project to train 100 state university deans is very important for the school”?

“The programme will have a system-wide effect. It’s not just about education, it’s an attempt to change the mindset of university managers,” says Alexey Gusev. “We know how to develop an entrepreneurial, business way of thinking. It’s time to use the experience we’ve gained on the corporate programmes and put it into the non-commercial sector”.

The “New Higher Education Leaders” programme is similar to the Executive Education programme in format: 8 five-day modules, group work, moderators and the best industry experts and professors. The participants’ main objective is not only to attend lectures, but to develop concrete projects which will become pilot platforms for change within the education system. Representatives of different universities will come together in teams to work on areas approved by Dmitry Livanov, Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. This approach will help stimulate inter-university cooperation and have a multiplicative effect on certain higher education sectors. “For example,” says Alexei Gusev, “The framework of the programme will facilitate the development of an industry education cluster model for the construction of aircraft, the effect of which will be felt not only by one given university, but by a whole constellation of strong engineering universities and even by the industry itself.” Moreover, there’s no doubt that a lot of really interesting strategic projects will emerge as the result of the programme, at the end of which participants will have to defend their theses before heads of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Participation in the “New Higher Education Leaders” programme is free, however competition for places was stiff, with three people to any one place. More than 300 top-management representatives from 170 higher professional educational establishments submitted applications. The SKOLKOVO business school commission selected candidates whose applications best satisfied the requirements and format of the programme. The criteria were determined in advance: managerial experience, being able to speak good English and prior involvement in scientific and innovational projects. The candidates were also asked to prepare a presentation explaining their own position on one of 15 topics relating to the development of higher education today.

Advantage was given to candidates who already had not only academic, but also project management experience, and also to those who could demonstrate experience working in business or other fields unrelated to education. “This radical approach to selection is designed to reflect one of SKOLKOVO business school’s main principles with regard to higher education,” explains Alexey Gusev. “Universities need to interact with the real economy. Without external stimuli to boost development they will remain isolated and consequently the decline of the whole system will be inevitable.”

Investment is made into the mutual cooperation of business and universities from the very first module of the programme. Numerous business experts are eager to cooperate with universities, for example Alexander Abramov, Founder of EVRAZ Group; Mikhail Pogosyan, President of the United Aircraft Corporation and Kamil Isaev, Head of Research at Intel. Enio Omae, a representative of foreign business and top manager at Education First, ex-Research and Development director at Apple and one of the world’s leading experts in the implementation of new technologies in educational products, proved one of the most exciting speakers.

This business-mentality focused approach and the attention paid to new technologies and project work will prove an integral part of the programme as a whole. This is namely why the “New Higher Education Leaders” programme will become an experimental platform for the implementation of bold ideas as part of higher education system reforms.

A red ocean is the existing world of competition where companies succeed by outperforming each other. A blue ocean is an untapped market space ready for growth. Instead of fighting over existing customers, a blue ocean strategist reaches beyond existing demand. This book looks at the sequence of strategic moves needed to create value innovation, the hallmark of a blue ocean strategy. The authors quantify the impact of blue ocean strategies by analyzing the launch of over 100 companies and comparing their revenues and profits. The findings show a significant advantage accruing to the small percentage of companies who manage to exploit a blue ocean.

The innovator’s DNA: mastering the five skills of disruptive innovators
Jeff Dyer, Hal Gregersen, Clayton M. Christensen
Harvard Business Review Press, 2011
296 pages.
ISBN: 9781422134818

Where do disruptive business models come from? This book looks at individual creativity in the business context. It is based on a large study of business innovators from companies including Amazon, Dell, eBay, Skype and PayPal. There are five discovery skills which distinguish the innovator from everyone else. These are questioning, observing, networking, and experimenting resulting in the ability to associate new ideas and make connections. The book also introduces the idea of the innovation premium, that is the extent to which the market value of a company is higher than can be attributed to its existing business, and identifies those companies, some obvious and some surprising, which are high on this measure. The leaders of these companies recognize the importance of discovery skills and are able to integrate them into the organizational culture.

What is Information Leadership and how it impacts our perception you can find out from the article by Pierre Casse, Professor of leadership at the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, and Nataliya Berezovska, CEO at Detonate Ventures, and SKOLKOVO Executive MBA graduate, publushed in the "New marketing" magazine.

“What’s worse than a the lack of tolerance is the excess of tolerance”
Voltaire

The Power of the Media
There is a little doubt that traditional public communication channels have a tremendous impact on the way people think, feel and behave. This is nothing new and has always been the case. Information can become knowledge and knowledge is power. This is becoming even more palpable since social networks and other user-generated web sites have become so ubiquitous across the world. People read, watch and listen to the news as well as to the countless comments made by a myriad of people across the spectrum of events, from local to global, and whilst absorbing this information consumers often fail to realize the extent of the impact such information may have on them. As such they may become brainwashed into interpreting reality in such a way.

Nevertheless the freedom of expression is a vital component in any democratic system. With respect to the World Wide Web, the United Nations’ Council on Human Rights has recognized the right of all people to connect to the Internet as a medium of expression. However, we must accept that access to such an abundance of information, coupled with the fact that interpretation is subjective and control of information flow is limited, can have an adverse effect on the proper functioning of any democratic system.

Therefore the question as to how we find the right balance between democratic values and the way in which we share information is ever more crucial. It is no longer only the concern of traditional media professionals such as editors and program directors. Who can be sure that the next ‘Arab spring’ generated through social media would lead a society towards positive change? From journalists to bloggers, from Facebook and Twitter users to owners of interactive web-based platforms, we are all face a range of major information leadership challenges.

The “Credibility and Reliability” Challenge
Did you ever have a chance to read soviet newspapers or watch TV when the USSR existed? There was a huge gap between what people could see in the news and experience in their day-to-day lives. Propaganda was the only form of mass media communication. Today propaganda has taken some new and subtle characteristics. For example:

Focusing too much on the bad news

Isn’t it quite depressing to listen to the news today? The way in which some editors select what is to be presented to the public is both devious and damaging. When challenged on the issue the fact they justify their decisions on the basis that bad news sells more media is churlish. The nature of public interest in news hasn’t changed much over time. According to a study carried out in 2007 by the Pew Research Center for People and the Press, war and terrorism, disasters both man-made and natural and crime and social violence are consistently in the Top-10 most popular topics among all news categories. But do news editors really only have to concern themselves with sales and profit? Naturally as news media consumers we are upset to hear about Anders Breivik’s attacks on civilians in Norway or the recent movie theater tragedy in American city Aurora, both involving mass killings unparalleled in recent history. There is no way of ignoring such terrible news. But should we not also be concerned about the way in which we consume such news and the potential impact this might have? In focusing on the wounds and deepening human tragedies from every angle and through every media channel to the point of total saturation, might we not encourage psychopathic behavior in the future?

The systematic presentation of bad events has an impact on the observers, readers and listeners who slowly but surely begin to see the world in a very distorted and depressing way. No wonder that so many men and women are so pessimistic across many societies today.

Reporting on the news in a biased ‘guerilla-like’ way

Another major issue is the way in which media people “spin” the information in the way they present it to the public. They interpret what is said and done, edit interviews to present the information in a way in which it was not intended and do not clear the final cut with those involved and they often manipulate films and pictures. This manipulation of information can be very subtle and extremely damaging especially in the reporting of people’s behavior. The main issues are often connected with giving:

One side of the picture and ignoring other perspectives;

Some explanation about what happened in a given situation without checking or validating the source of information;

The impression that the reporting is based on solid evidence when actually there is no real proof or validation of it in many cases for the sake the so called “scoop”.

Here we are not referring to instances of divorcing celebrities in which the tabloid press covers the story based on commercial agreements with one side or another. Biased reporting is much more threatening when hidden manipulation is being used for covering such fundamental issues as political systems or relationships between nation states. One can find such instances in some news media regarding the political situation in the Middle East or ethnic conflicts in ex-Yugoslavia to name but two.

Transgressing some basic ethical rules

Some news media players go so far as to spy on people, stealing private information from computers and mobile phones. They report on people in such a way that they destroy their lives. They broadcast information without checking its reliability and when shown to have been in error, they admit it and apologize, but seem unconcerned about the misery caused since the apology cannot undo the damage which has already been done.
One of the oldest tabloid newspapers in the United Kingdom, The News of The World, is closed now after 168 years in business as a result of illegally hacking into the phones of prominent people in society and Rupert Murdoch, one of the world’s most powerful media moguls, has seen his reputation and that of his corporation, News International, which owned the newspaper, tarnished as a result. People are still discussing the phone hacking scandal which emerged in 2005 in Britain and revealed 600 alleged victims, including celebrities, sport stars, politicians and victims of crime. The British government was forced to set up an official investigation into how the press should be regulated in future so that people’s privacy can be respected. The so-called Levinson Inquiry will report in 2013. It seems that certain players in the news media sector will do anything to attract people’s attention and generate sales.

The evidence would suggest that some news media producers confuse the freedom of expression with a lack of inner culture and civil tolerance. Polish radio presenters Cuba Voevudski and Michal Figurski not only caused a real scandal just before football tournament, Euro2012 which was jointly hosted by Poland and Ukraine, by broadcasting insulting comments about Ukrainian women on air. As a result of their offensive behavior, they now face potential jail sentences of three years according to the criminal code. Unfortunately for the accused, nobody can turn back time and undo the humiliation caused as a result of their behavior.

The “Battle for Audience” Challenge
It is clear that the way in which information is distributed presents a key challenge. Digitization and the proliferation of mobile platforms offer more effective methods of reaching ever larger audiences. The media landscape has changed forever. Large media corporations across the globe consistently report decreasing profits generated by traditional print media with corresponding increasing trends in online subscriptions. For instance, papers such as The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The International Herald Tribune, The Times and Financial Times have all reported that on line subscriptions have exceeded subscriptions for traditional print media this year for the first time.

The combination of current trends in information distribution and social networking give rise to some interesting implications. From a technical perspective, anyone with access to the Internet has the same potential to distribute information as the world’s media corporations. The speed with which information is circulated is increasing. However in the maelstrom of information exchange, the facts as reported are sometimes inconsistent from source to source, something of which the consumer must be ever mindful. Nevertheless, creating the news is becoming more interactive. Our engagement in social networks provides us with the opportunity to absorb news to which we would never have had access if the friends in our networks would not retweet or like it sharing information directly with us.

Given the changing and emergent nature of the media sector and the pressure on media distributors to build and control audience circulation, traditional media distributors have a tendency to overdo it and focus on the generation of sensationalist news items to capture the consumers’ attention and outdo the competition. The battle is going to intensify in the near future.

The “Responsibility” Challenge
Back in the pre-digital era where every member of the editorial staff in the media supplier had a designated role and job description, the lines of authority were clear and there was no ambiguity as to who was in charge. But now the situation is far more complicated. It is not only unclear as to who is responsible for the information circulated but consumers are so often confused as to what conclusions are to be drawn from the information distributed.

Public concern is growing over where to draw a line between the need for editing information in the public interest and censorship. One question to be addressed is if, and how, those who act without due consideration for the public interest can, or should be, moderated. In the case of social networking platforms, should users who abuse their rights of expression by acting in ways contrary to the public interest, have their accounts deleted?

Democracy in action can sometimes give rise to distasteful outcomes. For example, James Holmes, the alleged gunman accused of shooting innocent movie goers at a theatre in Aurora, Colorado, USA managed to generate many on line followers and supporters once his profile became public. Following the incident, young people created Holmes-related fan pages on Tumblr and Facebook through which people could express their support for his acts of violence. However the Holmes Facebook page which had registered approximately 800 “likes” was mysteriously removed soon after it was launched on the day of the shootings. A spokesperson for Facebook, in an interview with CNN, explained that whilst “incredibly distasteful”, the Holmes page didn’t violate the company’s terms and conditions. At the same time, authorities at Facebook systematically delete images created by artists in instances where they consider such images to demonstrate nudity. Students at the New York Academy of Art consistently find work removed from their profiles. Even Gerhard Richter, a famous German visual artist, found himself the victim of Facebook’s policy when the picture of his “Emma” was deleted from the Centre Pompidou fan page.

An individual may ask how anyone can be personally responsible for information in circulation. Once in circulation we lose control. It is critical that we realize that we don’t have any private space on any social network. Therefore we must exercise care over what information we choose to share, particularly when it comes to sharing details about our private lives. “Savvy sharing” should become the motto for Internet users who broadcast over social networks.

As examples of less than “savvy sharing”, a deputy in the Ukrainian parliament uploaded a picture of the dashboard of his sport car while driving more than twice the legal speed limit or the American teacher who lost her job as a result of posting offensive comments about her students on Facebook. There are many such examples of people failing to both appreciate the implications of releasing information into the public domain and recognize the importance of sharing information responsibly.

The emergent culture of openly sharing information publicly through social platforms is still in its infancy and so it is not surprising that a recognized code of behavior has not as yet been established. As a result, people in many societies across the world are exploring the implications involved and calling for some common code of conduct to clarify the issue of responsibility in the proliferation of online media.

The “Media Leadership” Challenge
As we survey the trends in the media sector we can’t fail to recognize how society’s information management systems have grown. It’s a complicated environment in which behavior is emergent. Mechanisms in play include both traditional and new media, individual contributors and social platforms, news agencies and informational crowd-sourcing etc. When considering how the world is changing, it seems clear that people are no longer passive media consumers waiting to be spoon-fed but rather active co-creators and distributors of media in their own right. In this new emerging scenario, speed of distribution is of the essence. The World Wide Web, as a distribution infrastructure provides people with the means of generating and participating directly in affecting social change where they consider this desirable and to the benefit of society as a whole.

Nobody is protected from the enormous impact of the free circulation of any type of news – from politicians whose comments and views can be validated and reacted upon very quickly to business people who cannot hide anymore behind some confidentiality rules that protected them in the past from too much visibility.

Of course, it’s up to each individual to make up his or her mind about what’s happening in the world around them. Moreover each individual must decide for themselves on the implications of new trends in social communication and interaction. Nevertheless the situation seems fragile enough to require some action in reinventing ourselves in the way we consume and share information with each other in our social environments.

On October 27 an open lecture of Richard Reed, Co-founder of Innocent Drinks, “An Innocent Approach to Business.Building a Sustainable Business” took place on the SKOLKOVO business school Campus.

There were really many people interested in how three young 26 year old guys have managed to develop an enterprise on production and sale of smoothies (natural fruit cocktails without preservatives) starting from a homebrew business to the first position on the European market. Everybody would like to get to know the secret, how is it possible to become the niche leader with zero expense on advertising?!

First of all Ruchard has told about the corporate culture, internal communications and the company’s mission. The principles of Innocent Drinks are as follows: to hire A class people who share the company’s values, appreciate and support employees.

“95% of employees is proud to work at Innocent Drinks. It is not a that bad competitive advantage of the company!”

After that Richard has shared marketing tricks that have made up for the lack of advertising: an unusual way of the effective date naming “enjoy before…” instead of “use before…”; a funny list of ingredients “2 bananas, 6 strawberries, 2 fat nuns”; colorful mooing vans-cows that stagger while driving.

“For 5 years those methods have made the brand by 65% more recognizable!”

Speaking about the mission Richard has underlined that Innocent Drinks use only renewable raw materials, care about ecological purity of the production and spends 10% of the income on charity.

“We do not work with suppliers who do not correspond with our mission”.

Perhaps, soon we will be able to enjoy the Innocent Drinks products in Russia as well. The most important condition is,

“The transportation must not take longer than 36 hours otherwise too much CO2 is being emitted ”.

On October 6 during the SKOLKOVO Open Day we had a great chance to talk to one of the most famous online-business entrepreneurs Dr. Pehong Chen, CEO of BroadVision. So we asked him and Gary Fowler, SKOLKOVO Startup Academy mentor, a few questions about Russian entrepreneurship and the Silicon Valley impact on it.

- Good afternoon, Dr. Pehong Chen. Thank you for spending a few minutes on our quick interview.

P.C.: Hi, it’s also my pleasure to be a part of the SKOLKOVO Open Day.

- First of all, could you share with us your strategic plan for Russia and its market?

P.C.: Well, it’s not just about Russia, but also about other countries. We want to primarily work with partners rather than do direct sales as BroadVision is not a very big company. The thing is that it’s more important to establish an eco-system where many partners would work together. Especially in Russia that is a new market for us. Gary (Gary Fowler- editor’s note) is our new representative, country manager here, and his goal is to set up several partnerships for us, for example, with the government or other clients from different sectors and industries in order to have their own cloud. Basically, it calls for a more partner oriented approach than direct sales approach.

- Returning to the SKOLKOVO Startup Academy, you’ve already met our students, right? Do they differ from Silicon Valley entrepreneurs or not?

P.C.: In many ways they are not different! All entrepreneurs look alike anywhere in the world.
In terms of talent they are also very much alike. If you are well-educated, you have good ideas, it doesn’t matter where you are – in Japan, Moscow or Silicon Valley – you probably look and think very similarly. The real question is your understanding of different parts of your business. The SKOLKOVO Startup Academy is a programme which I think is making an exposure of good ideas to the rest of the world. It gives its students a high-impact learning experience in order to develop very quick understanding of aspects of building a successful company. I hope that it will be developed and it will bring more cases and entrepreneurs over here. I will also encourage my friends to be a part of this programme, to participate and make some sort of exchange in order to make local startups more capable of taking opportunities to become successful on the global market.

- What do you think is the main lesson that the Silicon Valley can teach Russian entrepreneurs?

P.C.: I think that number one is the fact that there’s a real global market out there. You don’t have to think about just small, domestic things. Throughout the history of business we can see that every successful company always have a balance of domestic and international markets, especially today, when everything is one click away from everywhere. I would encourage Russian entrepreneurs to think that their product is built for the whole world, not just Russia. And then you have to learn how to do that! Like I said in my lecture today, it’s a lot easier to sell anything to the rest of the world, than 5-10 years ago. There is an opportunity you can tap into now, you just need to think bigger.

- Thank you very much! Gary, now I’d like to welcome you and ask you a couple of questions. Could you, please, tell us how this partnership eco-system will be developed in Russia?

G.F.: Thanks! One of the things is that we need to make people more aware of BroadVision and the opportunities out there that Clearvale Enterprise represents to their partners. It’s like Facebook for business. Part of it is just getting the word out for people to have the message, to understand it, because there’s something we all know we need to do, but we don’t know how! And there’s an interesting technology and vehicle to do those things.

- As I understand you are looking forward to seeing our SKOLKOVO Startup Academy students with all of their ideas and projects of the cloud, aren’t you?

G.F.: I’m looking forward to hearing their ideas and projects about everything, because it’s fun to see their smiling faces full of optimism, beliefs and dreams and with all of that I don’t care what project sphere it is. The cloud is interesting, obviously, but everything in the end is a passion and we want them to have “the heart and the mind”.

- Our students have visited to the Silicon Valley this summer. What do you think, how strong was the Silicon Valley impact on their minds?

G.F.: Well, first of all, it has opened them up! They all started to understand other people from many countries doing many things. The key point was that in Silicon Valley it’s not just the Americans, but it’s Americans from China, Greece, from anywhere! And people are still coming there for one reason – Silicon Valley develops passion, which they can express. And they bring it back home, so each time taking a look around we can see more people smiling and understanding. And that’s probably the biggest impact.

- I think that they just start believing that they actually are able to do something

G.F.: That’s right!

P.C.: Let me, please, add that Russia, as well as other Eastern countries, has a strong education system. Students here are very well trained, highly skilled in math, science, analysis. Those are very important foundations needed to enter a business and do good work. What you need to improve is an additional business scope, business vision and business understating. Then you combine it with a lot of new businesses and startups and successful entrepreneurship forms.

- Thank you very much for your time. It was my pleasure to talk to you. I hope that you enjoy your stay at the SKOLKOVO business school.

P.C.: Thank you too! Good luck!
